Features and benefits

This product includes the most recent interpretation of the geology of Great Britain as mapped to 1:50,000 scale by the British Geological Survey. This is overlain on 1:50,000 mapping from the Ordnance Survey.

Although the geology of Great Britain remains largely unchanged over the geologically insignificant timescale of the human lifetime, there are constant updates to the mapping as the understanding of the often hidden 'surface' geology is improved by growing knowledge, technological advances in investigation and new exposure through excavation and natural ground movement.

The data is available for the majority of Great Britain apart from a few small sheets in Wales (please refer to our attached coverage map) which are currently being produced.

This British Geological Survey 1:50,000 scale Geology product offers:

  • OS 1:50,000 mapping
  • BGS Bedrock (Solid) Geology
  • BGS Superficial (Drift) Geology
  • BGS Linear features - (e.g. faults and folds)
Also included where mapped are:
  • Artificial Ground Geology
  • Mass Movement Geology

Simple to use:

The data is available here for instant selection and download in a simple to use PDF layered format with Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 mapping as an underlying layer.

Not only is the data delivered quickly but with the FREE Adobe Reader (Version 6 or later) it is easy to view and print all or just a few of the possible layers at one time and thus more instantly understand the information.

Choose from:

  • BGS 50k Standard - at the mapping scale of 1:50,000
  • BGS 50k Enlarged  - enlarged by 2 to a scale of 1:25,000

The enlargement offers no greater accuracy or detail but provides a product which is less compact and thus simpler to read for complex or 'busy' geological areas. It is also useful if you only require a small area but want to fill a certain sheet size, for example A4.

PLEASE NOTE:

It should be noted that the Ordnance Survey mapping may have been updated more recently than the British Geological Survey in some areas and show different surface features to those for which the geology was mapped. This largely relates to man made changes through construction and excavation.

More information to help you understand geological mapping and its interpretation can be found in the 'more information' section.
