OS MasterMap - Accuracies and Pricing

Scale and Accuracy:

For cartographic representation, OS MasterMap Topography Layer is captured and designed for display at 1:1250, 1:2500 and 1:10 000 scales in urban, rural and mountain/moorland areas respectively.

The surveyed scale of a location does not prohibit it's print scale. For example, a moorland area may be printed at 1:1250 scale. However, it should be remembered that simple 'enlarging' the mapping in this way does not change the accuracy of the underlying data.

Due to the higher accuracy of capture, urban is more expensive than rural which is in turn more expensive than moorland.

Pricing  and accuracy implications:

Pricing information may be found in our standard price guide and technical information relating to the accuracies associated with the different levels of mapping capture can be found in Chapter 1.11 of the attached OS Ordnance Survey MasterMap user guide.

How will i know the survey scale?

It should be noted that the definitions of urban, rural and moorland do not always tie in with conventional descriptions as even an open field may have been surveyed to 1:1250 (urban) scale accuracy if located in an 'urban' tile.

Our interface will automatically check the scale during purchase to confirm the pricing is correct but to be sure exactly what scale of mapping is available for your required area, the Ordnance Survey's Landline Tile selector is a useful tool.
