OS MasterMap® Integrated Transport Network™(ITN) Layer

The ITN Layer is a detailed, accurate and up-to-date digital dataset consisting of a  Roads Network theme and a Road Routing Information (RRI) theme for Great Britain.

The Roads Network contains road categories, from motorways and primary routes to named and unnamed minor roads and local streets.

RRI contains features such as height, weight and width restrictions; traffic calming; turn restrictions; and one-way roads as well as vehicular access and time restrictions.

New for Autumn 2010 - Urban Paths Theme

The OS MasterMap® Integrated Transport NetworkTM (ITN) Layer - Urban Paths Theme is the latest addition to the MasterMap digital mapping family.  It has been created to encourage multi- modal travel in Britains towns and built up areas.

The dataset is a logical network consisting of path centrelines in a link and node structure and includes man-made footpaths, subways, steps, footbridges and cyclepaths in all urban areas of Britain over 5km2

The Urban Path Theme extends the functionality of the ITN Road Network Theme and Road Routing Information (RRI) Theme by using additional line links and nodes to join up path and road centrelines so users can develop their own bespoke networks combining different modes of transport.

How the ITN Layer can be used

The ITN Layer is a flexible, precise foundation for transport management systems, road routing, the co-ordination of street works, emergency planning and many other applications.

Planning, monitoring, analysis

  • Road safety, including accident-rate statistics
  • Civil contingency planning and operations
  • Safe routes to school
  • Streetworks management and coordination
  • Road-user charging
  • Emergency service command and control
  • Noise mapping
  • Traffic analysis

Asset management

  • Road maintenance – revenue support grants
  • Street furniture, for example, fire hydrants, lamp posts
  • Buried services
  • Each local authority can create and maintain its component of the Local Street Gazetteer to level 3

Transport, logistics and distribution

How can the ITN Layer benefit you?

There are many benefits to the ITN Layer. For instance;

  • The data includes all roads, from motorways to pedestrianised streets.
  • The inclusion of bridge weight, height and width information allows precise HGV journey planning.
  • The ability to route and schedule deliveries allows more drops per day, thus saving time and money and realising significant benefits in increased customer satisfaction and reduced expenses.
  • Routing can be optimised to make better use of your resources, for instance, for waste management or pupil school transport.
  • The data can be used with your own data systems, giving more flexibility.
  • If you want to create and maintain the National Street Gazetteer to level 3, the ITN Layer supports this.

The data can be used with other OS MasterMap layers, for instance:

  • the OS MasterMap Imagery Layer and the Topography Layer - to get a highly accurate picture of an area or site and indicate the inherent advantages and disadvantages of the area under review; and
  • the OS MasterMap Address Layer and the ITN Layer - to plan transport and distribution logistics more accurately and to establish the most cost-effective and quickest routes for deliveries.

The ITN data is updated every six weeks: you will always have up-to-date information that you can rely on.
