Many Geographical Information Systems (commonly referred to as GIS) can automatically understand these files resulting in the image/mapping being placed in the correct geographical location such that other detail may be overlain.
Many versions of AutoCAD however instead require the user to fill in a number of fields to achieve the same effect. The document attached here shows how to calculate the necessary values.
